Chickens are at the heart of any farm or small-holding. We have 34 Biodynamic and Organic chickens at a time and one cockerel, a cockerel helps crown control the ladies, he gets involved in any chicken squabbles, he protects them from predators and sires their young. Our chickens free-range in a mix of woodland and pasture with ample housing space for perching and nesting to strict Organic and Biodynamic standards. They eat grass, greenery, grubs, bugs, worms and insects. We supplement them with organic layers pellets, Biodynamic Oats and Wheat, they also love Biodynamic cabbages, sprouts, squashes and pretty much anything else from the veg patch. Chickens are an ancient animal, descendants from dinosaurs, they are inquisitive problem solvers, they can recognise up to 100 faces of other chickens and humans. Chickens can fly and will roost in trees as long as their wings are not clipped.
In Biodynamics chickens following other farm animals will scratch the ground, disturbing the surface which helps create biodiversity, they let light and air into the very top layer and deposit nitrogen exactly where its needed. They will eat worm eggs and larvae from the animals dung which helps keep worms in balance.
The Essence of Chicken: Inquisitive problem solving, attention to detail, being land based and winged, they move between the earth and the wind providing an energetic connection between two frequencies, whilst their longevity and adaptation from dinosaurs shows their resilience to earth based time.
