These six workshops throughout the summer are for everyone and anyone wanting learn more about growing their food, from a salad in a pot, a small allotment to a full on veg and herbal garden. Start growing and move towards securing your own food and medicinal resources, all while nourishing your soul and meeting like minded people. If you are already growing vegetables and herbs in an allotment, in your own garden, on your balcony or not at all yet, it doesn’t matter, we are here to share and grow with you!
You can book one day only, a number of days or for all six days as one full course and get a hefty discount!

This magical land is set within a small Biodynamic Farm nestled in the hills and valleys of the medieval landscape of the High Weald, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty teeming with wildlife and natural habitat.
We will start at 10am (9.30am for a coffee and a chat) and go on until 4pm each day with breaks and time for sharing over coffee and biscuits. Packed lunches, water, sun hats and smiles are a must!

DAY 1: Preparing Beds and Planning for the Busy Season Ahead – Saturday 12th April

- Crop planning and Rotations

- Prepping the ground well and why?
- Intro to Biodynamic gardening
DAY 2: Propagation- Where Do I Start? – Sunday 13th April
- Seed sowing, Division of seeds and plants, Pricking out, Cuttings with herbs/perennials Transplanting etc
- Buying seeds – open pollinated, F1s – what does it all mean?
- Should I sow in pots, trays the ground? BD practices
DAY 3: Wonderful Weeds! – Saturday 21st June
- How to manage unwanted plants and how they may help us in our gardening, is it a weed, a medicinal herb, edible etc
- Weeding and lifting plants, hoeing for maintenance etc
- Companion plants
DAY 4: Supporting Plants for Optimum Growth – Sunday 22nd June
- Feeding and fertilising – BD preps – Horn Silica Foliage spray, seaweed solutions, Nettle and comfrey teas
- Maintenance
- Small scale watering systems
- Seed saving
DAY 5: Pests and Diseases – Saturday 16th Aug
- A look at common pests and diseases
- Preventative approaches – bug hotels, ponds and beetle banks
- Crop protection – nets and their different kinds
- BD sprays – Horsetail tea, Wormwood tea
DAY 6: Composting for Soil Vitality – Sunday 17th Aug

Helen Dodd and Joanna Gore


Helen is passionate about food growing and creating productive environments that inspire and support positive learning. With over 20 years’ experience in setting up growing projects, devising and running training programmes in organic growing within and for a variety of settings. She has run an eco centre, set up a veg box business and run food growing and composting programmes to schools and groups.
For the past 8 years Helen has been developing and managing The Kindling Market Garden in Stockport, growing veg and training aspiring organic growers, supporting them in developing the many skills needed for food growing and gaining hands-on practical experience.
Helen believes that everyone, no matter what their background or income should have access to affordable, healthy, locally grown food.
Joanna is a Biodynamic and Organic grower and farmer, setting up Roots to the Moon four years ago she keeps a small wholistic regenerative eco agricultural growing system, creating living composts from animal manures produced by her small flock of sheep, chickens, pigs and cows. She is a Biodynamic, Organic and Pasture for Life inspector for the Biodynamic Association and works freelance in business advice for Landworker’s Alliance and Countryside Fund. With a background in education she loves to bring a variety of workshops, courses and school visits to Roots to the Moon.
